Remember When?

Born to Ray and Thelma Seaman in Newark Ohio (1943) Ray Seaman was off to a head start in music. His father was already an accomplished musician and adding to that talent was his mother, playing a good "radio"!

By the time Ray was 5 years old he had begun singing with his family as well as doing solo work. Accepting Christ at the tender age of 7, the musical lyrics now took on a fresh new meaning. You would find him singing tenor with "The Calvary Quartet" from the time he was 12 until he was 17. In 1960 he would record his first album with them.

1962-1967 would take Ray to Dayton, Ohio where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Janet, and in 1964 their first-born child, Rodney, would be born. During these years Ray was singing lead with the "Gospel Crusaders Quartet, "The Mariners Quartet and then his Baritone voice would be joined with the "Notemen Quartet". He was also afforded him the opportunity to record several albums (with the "Mariners" and "Notemen" quartets).

From Dayton Ray, Janet, Rodney and their six-week-old daughter Rhonda headed south to Kenner Louisiana where they would live until 1974. This is where Ray would find himself Director of Music at the Glendale Baptist Church, singing Tenor with "The Directors" (a male trio of Directors of Music from other churches) and finally a mixed quartet, "The Trinity Singers", that would include Janet’s beautiful voice. This is also a time when Rodney and Rhonda would create some wonderful music memories to be cherished as they sang with their parents from time to time.

Garland, Texas was the next stop from 1975 until 1976. Winning the "Walley Fowler Talent Contest" while singing lead with "The Noblemen", their compensation was to open for "J.D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet" during several concerts that year in the Texas area.

1977 took the family back to Dayton, Ohio for a year with Ray directing music at Fairmont Baptist Church and once again singing in a trio that included Janet. Then it was on to Hollywood, Florida where at the First Baptist Church of West Hollywood the trio would sing for the church’s radio and television programs.

Indiana became home in 1981 and remains the same today. After serving as Director of Music at Bethel Baptist Church in Noblesville for one year, Ray, Janet and their children were then led to what would become, and still is today, the family’s church home, Northside Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Rodney and Rhonda also continue to worship at Northside with their families. While at Northside, Ray has served musically in the choir, in ensembles, he’s served as a Worship Leader, he’s participated in the annually televised "Indiana Christmas Pageant", and he has also enjoyed solo work as well as a mixed trio known as "The Trio" and is currently singing (along with Janet) in a quartet known as "HIS VOICE, Through Us".

2003 brought about the reuniting of "The Mariners Quartet", the same four voices from 1963. Ray’s singing schedule currently alternates between "HIS VOICE, Through Us" and the reunited "The Mariners Quartet".

All in all, while the opportunities, circumstances, locations or groups have changed, while children have grown and grandchildren have been born over the years (and Ray will be happy to tell you how awesome they are!) one thing remains the same, Ray loves to sing Southern Gospel music with the emphasis on "Gospel".

It’s not about the song, but about a single message…. "We have a Risen Savior. Do you know Him? May I introduce you?"
